JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP IN AID OF MS SOCIETY

Keith Costa once again organised yet another tournament at
the Club this time it was a Judo one in aid of the MS Society £300 was raised
well done all. Judo has been having a bad time pre the Olympics but even though
the Olympic Judo in general was boring to watch the two British women who won
Bronze and Silver must have had an impact on the Public. Faversham,
Sittingbourne and Folkestone have all seen an increase in their membership but
more importantly there seems to be a revived interest in Judo Competition. The
Competition at the weekend was expected to have 30 players but over 70 turned
up and with parents, spectators there must have double that amount in the DOJO
which is only 30ft x 60ft. It was so full when Club President Martin Clarke 8th
Dan turned up after the comp had started he literally could not get into the
Dojo. There was queue stretching right down the road waiting to get in, the
last time that happened was over 20 years ago.
So the next comp we will have to get a bigger Hall and lets
hope we return to the good old days in the 1980’s where the YJC used to hold an
open tournament and get 400 competitors. Faversham Judo Club have been going
for 30 years and recently they have had to change venues they are now based at
the QE school at Faversham and this will make an ideal venue for a tournament.
Club Secretary George Holbrook said that he was very pleased with the club
turnout and that he had seen a big increase in membership and with moving to
the new premises he believes it will grow even bigger.
